What to expect when building a cottage or boathouse

There are several critical steps to completing any construction project. No matter how big your project is, from beginning to end, the key to its success is solid communication between yourself and your builder.

Fitzmaurice Bros. Carpentry

Here is an overview of what you can expect when you hire Fitzmaurice Bros. Carpentry:

1. Initial Consultation: Because the builder/property owner relationship is a long term one, the senior member you initially speak with at Fitzmaurice Brothers automatically become your construction manager. Until your project is complete you are a team making everyone comfortable from the start.

2. Definition of the Scope of Work: This is where your vision starts to become reality and a design team is introduced. Preliminary drawings are compiled to ensure you are happy and that the scope of the project is moving in a direction you are comfortable with.

3. Permits and Minor Variances: Scope of your project will help establish what permits, minor variances or zoning changes may be required. Good communication about any of the above will definitely avoid any potential time delays.

4. Project Costing: Cost will always be discussed from the start. At this stage, items on your "must have list" will be formally costed producing a formal per square foot price. Be prepared for different revision at this step with any revisions will automatically be costed accordingly.

5. Generating Blueprints: Time to make your vision a reality - so our in house design team is ready to create your final blueprints. Once they are produced the customer has signed off a project timeline is generated.

6. Long Lead Time Items: Immediately after the customer signs off on the blueprints, long lead time items are addressed and ordered. (ie: speciality windows and doors, custom made trusses etc.) Climate and location should be addressed at the beginning. For example things like blasting, island work or winter construction should be accounted from the start.

7. Starting Construction: This is a busy and exciting time for all. Through good communication you will always understand (from a timing perspective) where the project is at. Lean on your construction manager with any questions. Because you checked your references up front you know this will be a smooth transition.

8. Construction's Complete: You move in and enjoy the "after sale service" that is provided. With applicable warranties in place feel free to enjoy your projects completion.

All of the above are very important steps any construction project works through. At Fitzmaurice Bros. Carpentry our motto is that "Shaking hands at the end of a project is more important than shaking hands at the beginning - Signifying that we’ve taken a journey together and we are both happy with the result.
