Should we Renovate or Rebuild?

Renovating or rebuilding a home or cottage is one of the biggest expenses most people will manage in their lifetime. Dave Nodwell’s Muskoka Contracting understand first hand that the big decisions need to be the right ones.

When considering renovating, the first thing you need to consider is the structure itself.

Do you like it? Are you happy with the design? If you're dreaming about a completely contemporary look and you currently live in a turn of the century style dwelling, renovating may not be for you.

From the beginning, the current condition of your home or cottage needs to be taken under serious consideration. If your castle is in poor condition, a knock-down and rebuild might be the wiser (least expensive) choice.

That said it's difficult to generalize on what the best choice may be. There are many factors to consider. As an overview keep the following in mind:

• Renovating is costly – (especially when most people want more space) but so is rebuilding. Weigh the ‘pros and cons of both from the start.
• Renovating has more 'unknowns' than rebuilding, including a greater likelihood of hidden costs.
• Timing – Rebuilding will be more time consuming that renovating.
• Be it renovating or rebuilding – understand all your costs and timelines up front.
• With either - take your time with the decision and trust your contractor.
