Muskoka rooms have earned their role as a popular three-season option, offering an expansion of indoor space into a bug-free almost outdoor space. Typically their location is key, offering lake vistas from cottages or garden views from homes. Large window openings bring the outdoor feel into the home.
In yesteryear, Muskoka rooms were simply screened-in porches, sometimes the screens were removed for winter time or covered with shutters for protection from the elements or an errant branch from gashing the screens.
Today, there are many options for Muskoka rooms. Replacing simple screens with window panes with screens allows greater flexibility in use. Instead of shuttering or stapling plastic to the window openings, one can just shut the window for the winter and store furniture inside without worry.
The limits of three seasons can be stretched, not only because of upgraded construction, but also with heat sources. Although the windows are not typically insulated in a three-season room, add a heat source and many people find themselves donning their coats and spend some time in the room on a sunny winter day with the beverage of their choice.
The Muskoka room can be put on as an addition to the home or an existing sunroom or porch retrofitted to update. Retrofitting typically requires custom sizing and sometimes requires compliance with building codes that have changed over the years. For example, the code may require a knee wall of greater height than the old screens, which may have descended right to the floor. The solution is a tempered glass knee wall that is both see through and code-compliant. Vinyl windows offer solar warming capability and a larger opening capacity over glass.
The most recent trend is the framing of Muskoka rooms with post-and-beam construction. Custom windows, French or patio doors can all be added. A variety of colours for the window frames are available as well as the choice of aluminium or vinyl frames. Windows can be tinted for privacy. Roofing can be constructed of an acrylic that doesn’t yellow in order to allow even more light into these coveted indoor “outdoor” spaces.
Davlin was founded in Bracebridge in 1987, initially offering retractable and custom designed awnings for windows, boats and docks. In response to customer demand, over the years we’ve expanded to include three-season window and modular sunrooms and exterior vinyl sunroom window coverings.
